Code Name : The Big Wedding

tendollarsmail.com

Hi Everybody,
This is the first time that I am publishing a weblog and sincerely do hope that this doesn’t turn out to be the last. I will be touching upon "Technology" without going into the technical aspects exclusively. Everything that is published here will be related to information only which will be of interest to any person interested in information.
Thanks for bearing with me.
A code name or cryptonym is a word or name used clandestinely to refer to another name or word. Codenames are often used for military purposes, or in espionage. They are also used in business, for example as the names of confidential projects. There is a common but not universal convention of writing codenames in upper case. Code names are also commonplace in the computer world where products are informally given names during development. These names are usually only meant for use inside the company, and are dropped once the product is given an official designation under which it is to be marketed to the public. In recent years there has been a growing tendency of computer companies to make their codenames more public and more prominent. Here is a questionnaire on different products and their code names that were developed in the Computer Industry.

Q.1. A pretty easy one to start with…
Bob Miner was working on a consulting project for the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency in USA) where the CIA wanted to use this new language that IBM had written a white paper about. The project eventually died (of sorts) but Bob and one of the co-consultants saw the opportunity to take what they had started and market it. So they used that project's codename to name their new product. Funny thing is, that one of their first customers was the CIA...I would like to know the code name of the project as well as the name of the Company.

Q.2. What was developed under the code name “Lightning” ?

Q.3. What is being developed under the Code Name “Leopard”? I want specific answer for this.
Hint : This company follows a pattern of using the name of big cat names for previous releases of this particular product.

Q.4. “Mozilla” was the original code name for the product that came to be known as…

Q.5. What am I talking about here…
• Code name: McKinley
• Originally expected: Second half of 2001
• Actually launched: July 2002
• Available Speeds: 900 MHz, 1 GHz
• Cache size: 3 MB or 1.5 MB level 3 cache;
• Successors: Madison and Deerfield (2003), Montecito (2004)
Hint : The Company is famous for adopting the name of different places and cities for their code names.

Q.6. When Patrick Naughton became frustrated with the state of affairs of his company’s software languages and tools he was offered a chance to work on new technology and thus “The Stealth Project” was started. The Stealth Project was soon renamed to the “Project Green” with James Gosling and Mike Sheridan joining Patrick Naughton. After much hard work they created a product which was initially named Oak, after the tree which grew out the window of Gosling's office. How do we better know Oak as?

Q.7. Code-named “Project Masala”, the software developed can tap into spread-out data sources and return results, much like a search engine crawls through the Web. Masala will introduce a text-based search engine, based on research from the company’s “Project WebFountain”. The combination of the text search and the traditional database querying tools will allow businesses to pull search both "structured data sources" such as database records of transactions and unstructured information like file systems. Which Company?
Hint : The Company is famous for adopting the name of different foods for their code names.

Q.8. Microsoft will team up for a joint software offering that brings together this company’s business applications and Microsoft's Office desktop productivity applications. The software, which will be a separate product license, is being jointly developed under the code name "Mendocino". Which company?

Q.9. What comes to your mind when you see the following code names….
Preview or Beta, Halloween, Mother’s Day, Mother’s Day+0.1, Picasso, Rembrandt, Colgate, Vanderbilt, Biltmore, Thunderbird, Mustang, Hurricane, Manhattan, Apollo, Starbuck, Hedwig, Lorax, Cartman, Piglet, Zoot, Pinstripe, Guiness, Fisher, Wolverine, Seawolf, Roswell, Enigma, Skipjack, Valhalla, Pensacola, Limbo, Psyche, Shrike, Severn, Taroon, Yarrow, Tettnang, Heidelberg ?

Q.10. The code name of the latest version of this product refers to a bar in the Whistler ski area of British Columbia, located between two peaks, Whistler and Blackcomb. The Company names the different versions of this product after different mountain peaks. Enough Hints. The Company and the Product.

And Lastly…Something not related to the computer world…which famous (rather infamous) incident is associated with the code name given in the Title of this blog?

I would like to thank Mr. Rupreet Singh Gujral for introducing me to this wonderful world of blogging.
